My Passport Ultra Mac Not Showing Up

So I have a My Passport drive that I had back before my mac computer killed itself. It has pretty much every bit of information I really hold dear, and on any mac computer I can find everything on it.

Trying to use it on my girlfriend’s computer is a completely different matter. It doesn’t register that the drive even exists, though the device connected noise sounds. It doesn’t give me any option to format the drive, I don’t get any kind of error message. The closest thing this computer gets to admitting the drive exists is that in the devices and printers window it shows that a drive is there, and that the drive is “working properly”.

I tried plugging in a 1 TB WD drive that was also previously formatted for macintosh just to see if it would have a similar problem - it did not. The 1 TB drive works just fine and installed all of its drivers properly.

Someone please help, this is very frustrating.

If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say 'Verified' then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
